Folklore suggests it's the hiding place and shelter of Robin Hood and his "merry men". It's thought to be between 800 & 1000 years old!

| I took this in the summer of 2005.
For many years the public were allowed to walk right up to the major Oak and I remember doing so myself in about 1985. Since then though it has been fenced off, the ground around the tree was being constantly flattened and compacted and rain water could not penetrate to the trees' roots. The tree was in danger of dying and produced hardly any foliage.
Since being fenced off and the ground around it being aerated and regularly mulched the tree has thrived and now produces foliage and new growth.
The people in the picture shows the scale of the old tree.
